Project Pearls runs a kindergarten and social services in one of the most impoverished communities in Manila. The children are fed, nurtured and educated through their early childhood development years to ensure they have a brighter future.
When Project PEARLS first met Sheila Mae, she was just six years old in the charco slums of Ulingan, Tondo, Manila — a child covered in soot instead of schoolbooks, working to survive in conditions no child should endure. But when she was asked if she wanted to go to school, her face lit up. That small spark of hope changed everything. With support from the Project Pearls, she was removed from child labor and placed in a classroom, graduating kindergarten with honors and beginning a journey that would steadily reshape her future.
Years later, now a high-achieving student and With Honors awardee at Taal High School, Sheila Mae is pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher — determined to open doors for other children just as doors were opened for her. Even now, she gives back by volunteering in hunger relief efforts and tutoring younger students who are struggling. Her story is proof that when compassion meets commitment, a single opportunity can transform not just one life, but an entire family’s future.
